Bibliography for Hidden Power Chassis

William and Douglas Milliken, Race Car Vehicle Dynamics, Society of Automotive Engineers Inc., Warrendale, PA

Race Car Vehicle Dynamics has been used as an engineering textbook at several universities. The authors and others formed a company, Milliken Research Associates, Inc. that provides consulting services to automobile and tire manufacturers, as well as race teams. They have developed many software simulation models. Every racer should have this book. It covers every topic from aerodynamics to tires in significant detail with a focus on race cars.

Thomas D. Gillespie, Fundamentals of Vehicle Dynamics, Society of Automotive Engineers Inc., Warrendale, PA

Fundamentals of Vehicle Dynamics is not as detailed as Milliken, but has ended up more dog eared. The material covered has been very useful, especially in the suspension related topics.

Joseph Katz, Race Car Aerodynamics Designing for Speed, Bentley Publishers Inc., Cambridge, MA

Katz it often considered the primary reference for race car aerodynamics. It is very good and cites many valuable source references for even greater detail.

Simon McBeath, Competition Downforce a Practical Handbook, Haynes Publishing, Somerset

As the title implies, this is a practical look at applying aerodynamic techniques to race cars. I have used it for car underbody design.

Carroll Smith, Engineer To Win The essential guide to Racing Technology or how to build winners which don’t break, MBI Publishing Company, Osceola, WI

Covers too many topics to list. Nothing in extreme depth, but enough to get you started and dig deeper. Something every racer should read through.

An update of the above version. Has a rare look at useful aerodynamics underbody treatments.

Carroll Smith, Racing Chassis and Suspension Design, SAE, Inc, Warrendale, PA.

Really good reference. A collection of SAE papers. Broken down in three sections: Racing Tires, Suspension Design, and Aerodynamics.

Herb Adams, Chassis Engineering Chassis Design, Building & Tuning for High Performance Handling, The Berkley Publishing Company, NY, NY

Tires, weight distribution, suspension design, aerodynamics and more.
