{"id":282,"date":"2019-10-27T22:30:10","date_gmt":"2019-10-27T22:30:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hdnpwr.com\/motorsports\/?page_id=282"},"modified":"2024-01-15T15:47:11","modified_gmt":"2024-01-15T15:47:11","slug":"air-properties","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/hdnpwr.com\/motorsports\/fundamentals\/air-properties\/","title":{"rendered":"Air Properties"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"\">Air is a mixture of gases.&nbsp; By volume, air is 78.084% Nitrogen, 20.946% Oxygen, 0.934 % Argon, and just traces of CO<sub>2<\/sub>, neon, methane, helium and others.&nbsp; The molecular weight of the combined molecules is <strong>M<sub>AIR<\/sub> = 28.97<\/strong>.&nbsp; Water vapor is important and exists at varying levels depending on weather conditions.&nbsp; For the purposes of engine tuning the oxygen is usually rounded to about 21%, and all the others are lumped together to make 79% nitrogen. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1012\" height=\"472\" src=\"https:\/\/hdnpwr.com\/motorsports\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Air-Components.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-284\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hdnpwr.com\/motorsports\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Air-Components.png 1012w, https:\/\/hdnpwr.com\/motorsports\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Air-Components-300x140.png 300w, https:\/\/hdnpwr.com\/motorsports\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Air-Components-768x358.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1012px) 100vw, 1012px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Standard Air<\/strong><br>The International Standard Atmosphere (<strong>ISA<\/strong>) is an agreed upon baseline for air.&nbsp; ISA conditions at sea level are <strong>59\u00b0F, 14.69 psia<\/strong> with no water vapor. &nbsp;The air density is <strong>0.0765 lbm\/ft<sup>3<\/sup><\/strong> at standard conditions, so a pound of air occupies 1 \/ 0.0765 lbm\/ft = <strong>13.08 ft<sup>3<\/sup>\/lbm<\/strong>.&nbsp; That\u2019s a box just over 28.25 inches per side. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Air Density Ratio<\/strong><br>Weather stations can give an air density ratio (<strong>ADR<\/strong>).&nbsp; It is the actual density relative to the ISA density.&nbsp; The actual outside air density and volume as determined by a weather station is: <br><strong>Air Density =<\/strong> <strong>ADR *<\/strong> <strong>0.0765 lbm\/ft<sup>3<\/sup><\/strong><br> and&nbsp;<br><strong>Air Volume per pound = 13.08 ft<sup>3<\/sup>\/lbm \/ ADR<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Air Ideal Gas Constant<\/strong> <br>The Ideal Gas Law (<strong>PV = mRT<\/strong>) can be used to estimate the properties of air at changing conditions.
